The need for clear communication isn’t limited
to the classroom, of course.  Being in an
interracial marriage has its own challenges. 
We still find things that we
don’t understand about our cultures.

クリアなコミュニケイションの必要性は、もちろんレッスンの中だけではなくて、国際結婚と言う私たちの境遇自体がチャレンジングな事なのですよ。

今だにお互いの文化の違いに理解できない事が巻き起こるんですよ。

 Emi: 
For example, I like the western culture of men opening doors for women.

Jeff: 
That’s what we do, in America. 
We’re gentlemen!

 Emi: 
But he didn’t help me carry that heavy box the other day. 

 Jeff: 
What are you talking about?

 Emi: 
I was carrying that big, heavy box and I motioned** for you to come and
help me and you didn’t.  **(Make “COME HERE” Japanese gesture.) 

 Jeff: 
Oh!  I thought she was WAVING! (Wave to the audience.)

In America we do this: (Make “Come Here” American gesture.) 

こっちに来て手伝ってとジェスチャーしたつもりが、Jeff先生には、ただEmi先生が手を振ったように見えたのですね。

その時のEmi先生・・・ひど～い!!!っと思ったのは言うまでもありませんよね。
