1月29日、大村市長をはじめ、市の教育委員会の方々や市議さん、 市内在住外国人と市民約80名が集まる中、大村市の国際交流の集い第一回目が開催されました。

以下はその時のJeff先生とEmi先生のスピーチ英語部分ですよ。

まず言語だけではなくジェスチャーなどのコミュニケイションの運び方の違い等、例を交えてお話をさせてもらいました。

以下は英語の部分のみを抜粋してみました。

Jeff: 
Good evening!  I’m Jeff Gawne.

Emi: 
And I’m Emi Gawne. 

Jeff: 
We live and work here in Omura. 
We teach English to a variety of different students with many different
goals.  Our goal is to help them
communicate effectively.  

When I was a new teacher, I quickly learned
the importance of clear communication.  I
can give you an example:  

Jeff 先生が新米先生だった頃のお話でduckと dogの発音の聞き取り間違いの話。

アメリカでは犬が飛ぶの?

In one class, I talked about how cold my
hometown was. I told my students that the ducks had to fly south for the
winter.  They were so interested!  I probably talked for five minutes about those
ducks.   When I finished, one
student asked me, “Jeff-sensei…in America, dogs
can fly?” 

生徒さんに文章で答えてほしかった時、日本語で「べんじょを作れますか?」「べんじょを作ってください。」 Jeff先生の「べんじょ」は「文章」のつもりだったみたいですよ。

I used to use a little Japanese in my
lessons.   Sometimes my students
used short answers when I asked them questions.   So I said, “Can you make a benjo?”  “Please make a benjo.”  Later, I realized
that the word for “sentence” was “bunsho.”  Now, I try not to use any Japanese in the
classroom.
