I had a great moment in my high school lesson tonight.
I paired up the students to discuss what they had done during Golden Week.
As time was running out, one boy took out a pencil and started drawing a picture of an eraser with a character on it.
When the students reported on what their classmates had done, his partner said that he had found “an interesting eraser at a stationary shop.”
The other students laughed at his picture but I applauded his ingenuity.
There were no re…strictions on HOW they had to communicate with their partners (with the exception of using Japanese) and he took full advantage of it.
I explained to the students that communication is SO much more than just speaking and listening.
Gestures, body language, facial expressions…I don’t care if they sing and DANCE as long as they are communicating.
I hope that the other students learned a lesson from that boy’s simple drawing.

Jeff先生の高校生クラスにて・・・ちょっとばかり嬉しいひと時があったので紹介いたしますね。 今日のレッスンでゴールデンウィークに何をしたかペアで話し合ってもらったのですが、一人の男子が鉛筆を取り出し、説明すべくキャラクターのついた消しゴムについて絵を描きだしました。 発表する時間となり、その男子の相手は、彼が文房具屋さんで面白い消しゴムを見つけたと話しました。その絵に他の生徒たちは、笑っていましたが、私はその絵で表現するという率直な発想を素晴らしいことと評価しました。どのようにコミュニケイションを図るか日本語禁止以外は何の規則も設けてはいなかったわけで、彼はうまい事やってのけたわけです。コミュニケイションとは、ただ聴く話すという事だけでしょうか。ジェスチャー、身振り手振りや顔の表情など・・・歌おうが踊ろうが構いません。コミュニケイションを図ってさえいれば！今日のレッスンで一人の男子のシンプルな絵から学べる事がありましたね。
